The Japanese technique of Reiki, currently being used by hospitals nationwide in their complementary care/integrative care departments, is also being used to treat autism spectrum disorders and Aspergers.
Reiki has recently moved into the mainstream of alternative treatments along with acupuncture, Tai Ch'i and acupressure. It is taught in some nursing schools, and has been studied by the National Institutes of Health.
Reiki doesn't cure autism but by alleviating some of the major issues in these very sensitive individuals, it produces an overall calming effect without drugs and without interfering with conventional or other alternative treatments. Reiki can address:
* Sleep troubles
* Relaxation
* Anxieties and fears
* Stress
* Tight muscles
* Headaches
* Stomach pains
Part of the difficulty for those with autism can be the extreme anxiety they feel--anxiety over social interactions, anxiety during transitions, anxiety when facing changes of the smallest degree. Anxiety makes it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. Headaches and stomach-aches abound in these children.
Reiki can help calm the fears of these overly-anxious beings. It is not uncommon for autistic children to begin to sleep better after the first treatment.
Again, Reiki is safe, natural and can be done without even touching the child if they are extremely touch sensitive, stranger-shy, or hyperactive.
I can also teach parents and care-givers how to do Reiki themselves. I can even attune the child himself so he can use Reiki to self-soothe. What better tool than to empower your autistic child with the ability to calm himself in a socially acceptable manner?
Reiki can work without interfering with either conventional or alternative treatments prescribed by a physician or naturopath and is a wonderful addition to an overall health plan prescribed by a doctor which may include therapy, medications or other. This site gives no medical advice and is not intended to substitute for advice from a doctor.

Reiki can be taught to caregivers, parents and even autistic children themselves to provide a valuable tool for self-regulation and immediate relief during stressful situations.
About Me:
A Certified Reiki Master since 1995, and mother of a young child with Aspergers, I began using Reiki on my daughter one day out of sheer frustration during the rumbling stage (the pre-cursor to an autistic rage.) I tensed as I saw the storm brewing on her face and reached out to Reiki to calm me in the face of it. I hadn't expected the result I got from my child. I felt not only myself grow calmer but felt her shift as well. Her muscles relaxed, she sighed and slumped against me, using her hands to motion to me to continue Reiki. Since that time, I've routinely included Reiki as a treatment for my daughter and other autistic clients not only during times of crisis but to improve sleep quality and quantity, reduce the number of rumblings and rages, decrease stress and anxiety during transitions and as a method of self-soothing.
As a seasoned Reiki Master with experience in the particulars of Autism Spectrum Disorders/Aspergers, such as sensory integration issues, I can successfully treat an individual in his or her own home with minimal disruption or in mine if that is preferable.
Reiki sessions for children don't involve lying down and seldom involve sitting still for long. Reiki can even be done while the child is engaged in video games, for instance.
Reiki is done fully clothed for both adults and children. For neurotypical adults (non-autistic), however, it is often done on a massage table in a quiet, dimly lit room to help them relax.
